Talklets - A mini-screen reader
I just stumbled upon Talklets.
It's a browser toolbar that converts text-to-speech. It's been primarily developed to make the web more accessible to users who have reading difficulties. Kinda like a lite screen reader. Having used Jaws and other screen readers for testing I get the impression that they're a tool that demands time and perserverance to develop the nessecary expertise for them to be useful.
The Talklets toolbar has smaller ambitions, it doesn't differentiate between linked and non-linked text for example, but it does the simple things really well. It's not an installed toolbar either, you can wander into an internet caff and start using it there and then which is mighty cool. Also, you can highlight a chunk of text and save it as an MP3 - perfect for saving news articles to listen to on an iPod.
