A Camp @ KCLSU, London, May 2009

Nina Persson and band in full flow at KCSLU last night.

While the new album is every bit as good as the 2001 debut it was much more exciting to hear those earlier songs re-discovered, re-learnt and re-invigorated. In particular, a slowed Angel Of Sadness seems to have improved with age. Stripped down to the basics it showcased Nina's voice to the full, the bombastic drumming and fragile, swooping guitar lines evoking memories of Joe Cocker's inestimable version of "With A Little Help From My Friends".

The songs from "Colonia", all shiny and new, sounded just as good live as on record, and with this show coming at the end of 28-date European tour the five-piece band there were few rough edges. But it was the old material that really shone. I just hope that the third album doesn't take another eight years.

Here's the setlist, unreliably dredged from my memory. I may have got the middle order muddled. I don't remember them playing "Here Are Many Wild Animals" which was a disappointment.

  • The Crowning
  • Love Has Left The Room
  • Frequent Flyer
  • Angel Of Sadness
  • I've Done It Again (Grace Jones Cover)
  • Golden Teet & Silver Medals (with Kristofer Åström)
  • Algebra
  • I Can Buy You
  • Bear On The Beach
  • I Signed The Line
  • <interlude where Nina went for a wee, was this an extended Eau De Colonia?>
  • Chinatown
  • My America
  • Stronger Than Jesus

And then the encore:

  • Song For The Leftovers
  • Boys Keep Swinging (Bowie cover)
